👋 GA4 prevents the unintentional collection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that may be present in URLs.

What is GA4 Data Redaction?

Its main objective is to prevent the inadvertent collection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from URLs.

This feature hides user-defined e-mail addresses and URL parameters on the client side. Masking is performed client-side before data is sent to Analytics. When you configure a new property, e-mail address masking is enabled by default.

ℹ️ The Data Redaction function is only available for web data streams.

How does it work?

The Data Redaction function detects parameters such as e-mail addresses and certain URL parameters prior to data collection, ensuring that they are masked.

Input : https://www.example.com/?firstname=John&lastname=Doe&email_address=johndoe@example.com

Output : https://www.example.com/?firstname=(hidden)&lastname=(hidden)&email_address=(hidden)

This feature is an excellent tool against PII collection, but don't forget that the responsibility for data collection remains with the entity collecting it.

Activate Data Redaction

  1. Go to Admin in Google Analytics.
  1. Select the GA4 property concerned
  1. Navigate to Data flow Events-> Hide data.
  1. Choose what you want to hide: e-mail addresses, specific URL parameters , or both.
  1. Test and preview masked data to ensure accuracy.
